It's Monday, which means my queue is somehow full and I have nothing to watch. Classic condition. Anyway, this week's streaming drop is a good one, led by a show I've been waiting on since it was first announced: Lanterns, new on HBO and HBO Max this week. If you missed my watch guide, go read it, but the short version is you should just watch it.

The full rundown comes courtesy of MSN's weekly OTT roundup, which tracks 11 new titles landing across Netflix, JioHotstar, Prime Video, and the rest between August 17 and 23. These are the ones I'd actually put on.

Lanterns (HBO Max) is the headliner. A Green Lantern story that skips the cosmic spectacle and goes full noir mystery instead, with Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre leading it. I've said before that week-to-week is my preferred way to watch anything with a mystery engine, so if that's how they roll this out, I'm already in. Seven full days to argue about each episode is the dream.

Welcome To The Jungle is the other big title of the week, with Akshay Kumar leading the charge. Call it a personal bias, but I've always felt late August is where studios quietly slip out the stuff they're not sure about. I have no insider knowledge there, just vibes and a lot of calendars. Sometimes that's where the fun lives. I'll report back.

Beyond those two, my impression of the list is the usual mix: Netflix originals angling for the top 10, international picks on JioHotstar for anyone keeping up with Indian cinema, and, I'm guessing, a reality show or two that I will pretend not to watch and then absolutely watch. Jess Wingo caught me adding one to my list last week and I've never recovered.

What I like about this particular week is the spread. You've got a prestige mystery, a jungle adventure, probably some reality junk food, and a couple of sleepers in there. That's a balanced diet. Too many weeks it's one big title and a wall of filler, and I sit there scrolling for forty minutes before rewatching an old Office episode. This week I won't have that problem and neither will you.

So, homework: pick one thing from the list you've never heard of and just press play. Worst case, you lose ninety minutes. Best case, you find something weird that you get to be smug about recommending to friends for the next year. That trade always works out.

What are you starting with tonight, Lanterns or the jungle? I genuinely want to know, because my own answer changes every hour.
