Every year the game showcase cycle hands us a stack of trailers that set our Discords on fire, and then... silence. WhatCulture put together a list of 20 major games that generated real excitement at reveal and have basically ghosted us since, and reading it felt like scrolling through old guild chat logs. Half of these I'd genuinely forgotten I was excited about.

The pattern is always the same. A reveal lands, the community erupts, everyone starts theorizing, and then the studio goes dark for two, three, sometimes five years. No gameplay. No release window. Just a store page sitting there collecting wishlists like a shrine nobody visits anymore. I've been burned enough times that I've stopped pre-building hype in my raid group for anything that doesn't have a date attached.

Some of these games are probably fine, to be fair. Development is messy, publishers reshuffle priorities, and a smart studio will go quiet rather than show something half-baked. Silence doesn't always mean trouble. Sometimes it just means the team is heads-down and the marketing calendar hasn't started yet.

But some of these are clearly in development limbo, and everyone in the room knows it. Those are the painful ones. The announcements that existed to win a showcase, generate a headline, and never had a real production plan behind them. It's the AAA version of a guild leader posting "big raid coming soon" and then logging off for a year.

The community cost is the part nobody measures. Every one of these vanished games built a fanbase at reveal, people making fan art, founding Discords, arguing about mechanics for a game that may never ship. When the silence drags on, those communities just dissolve, and that excitement doesn't come back later. Second reveals almost never hit as hard as first ones.

Go give the full list a read and see how many you actually remembered were still technically in development. I got humbled at least three times.

What about you, what's the one announced game you've been quietly waiting on for years with no reward? Mine's been sitting on my wishlist so long I had to check if the store page still existed. It does. Barely.
