New movie weekend, and the lineup is kind of all over the place in the best way. MSN rounded up the big releases and the one jumping out at me is 9 to 5, the 1980 workplace comedy with Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, back in theaters starting Friday.
It's Dolly at peak Dolly, Lily Tomlin doing Lily Tomlin things, and Jane Fonda plotting workplace revenge with a fantasy sequence that still goes harder than half the comedies made since. It's a movie about bosses being terrible that has somehow never stopped being relevant, and people quote it at me on TikTok like it came out last year.
But 9 to 5 isn't alone this weekend, so let's run through the rest of it.
Matchbox the Movie is the big new studio swing. It's based on the Matchbox cars, yes, the tiny die-cast ones your dad definitely has a shoebox of somewhere. Hollywood has been raiding the toy aisle for years now and I've made peace with it, but there's a ceiling on how much narrative you can pull out of a toy car. Then again, people said the same thing about a construction blocks movie once and that thing was a massive hit and made half the theater cry, so what do I know.
Animals is also hitting theaters. Based on the title alone I can't tell you if this is a creature feature, a dark comedy, or an A24-style metaphor where the animals are actually the humans, which is very on brand for October. Spooky season brings out the weird ones. Sometimes that's great, sometimes it's a movie you forget by the parking lot.
And then there's The Social Reckoning, which sounds like someone fed every thriller title from the last five years into a machine and hit generate. I know nothing about it beyond the name and that title is doing zero work to fix that. Could be a hit. Could vanish. The algorithm has not decided yet.
Zoom out and this is genuinely a solid mix, though. A re-release of an all-timer, a toy brand bet, a mystery box, and whatever The Social Reckoning is. Compare that to the dead zones we get some months where the answer to "what's new this weekend" is a horror movie that went straight to VOD and a documentary about a lake.
My weekend plan is pretty set. I'm going to 9 to 5, because Dolly on a big screen is an automatic yes for me. Matchbox the Movie I'll wait on reviews for. If word of mouth says it's actually fun, I'm in, I have a soft spot for movies that know they're ridiculous. Animals depends entirely on whether it's the fun kind of animal movie. And The Social Reckoning... I'll let someone else go first on that one.
If you've somehow never seen 9 to 5 on a big screen with an audience, this is the one to fix. Old comedies with crowds hit completely different, people laugh at stuff you'd scroll past at home. It beats spending the night rewatching something for the ninth time.
Go see Dolly. That's my entire weekend sorted.
