The weather finally turned, which means it's time for my favorite yearly ritual: making a watchlist I will complete maybe 40 percent of before the holidays eat me alive. A new roundup over at AOL collects more than 50 movies worth your attention this fall, and I read the whole thing twice, partly for work and partly because I'm a completionist who can't help himself.

The headline names are the obvious ones. The new Avengers movie is the biggest of the big, and Dune is right there with it. If the last few years taught us anything about big-format spectacle, it's that you plan ahead for the seat you want. That's all I'll say about that.

But the fun of a list like this is everything underneath the titans. It's October, so the horror section does a lot of the heavy lifting, and the source list treats horror as its own lane, which I respect. I won't walk through every title because the piece does that better than a summary would, but if you're a horror person, this is your season and this list knows it.

The prestige lane is deep too, at least by my read of the lineup. There's enough in there that I've already got a personal queue forming, and I'm working through it. No spoilers on my favorites yet. You'll hear from me when I've watched enough to have opinions worth sharing.

Family nights get their own section, which is the quiet miracle of a good mega-list. When someone bothers to sort the kid-friendly stuff from the R-rated stuff, parents notice. I notice. Half the battle of fall viewing is just knowing what you can watch with a nine-year-old in the room.

What I'd tell you, and what I keep telling people about these mega-lists, is don't try to watch everything. A list of 50 is a menu, not homework. Pick two horror movies because it's the season, one giant spectacle for the theater, and one weird thing you've never heard of. That's a good fall. The weird one is usually the one you remember in January anyway.

My own short list is still forming while I work through the lineup: one big spectacle in the biggest format I can legally get into, one horror double feature, and one title I'd never heard of until this list put it in front of me. That last category is the whole reason I read these things.

So what's making your cut this season? Go read the full list and tell me, because a menu this big always hides at least one gem nobody's talking about yet.
