The 2026 NFL season is here, which means every sportsbook in America is about to be very busy and a lot of wallets are about to be very light. If you're looking to bet the season, there's a solid primer over at MSN with odds, tips and picks, and it's worth your ten minutes before you put a dime down.

My piece first, because it's the hill I'll die on: treat this like a hobby to study, not a shortcut to riches. The guys who last in this game are the ones who do the homework, not the ones chasing a parlay lottery ticket. I've believed that a long time and nothing about a new season changes it.

So where do I look for value early? Call it a hunch built over a lot of years around this league, but my eye always drifts toward the teams people stopped paying attention to. Public money loves last January's highlights, and I like going the other way when everybody's staring at the same scoreboard. That's my approach, not gospel. The MSN piece has its own picks, and you should read them and argue with them.

A few ground rules I'd hand anybody sitting down at the bar next to me:

One, don't bet a futures ticket you can't afford to forget about. Season-long win totals are where I live, because they reward knowing rosters, not hot streaks.

Two, shop the number. A half point here and there adds up over a long season, and it can be the difference between a winning year and a losing one.

Three, beware the Week 1 overreaction. Some favorite is going to look terrible in the opener and the market will panic the next morning. I like eating that panic for breakfast, but that's a personal taste.

And keep the stakes sane. I've followed this league a long time and the most reliable thing I know is that the NFL humbles everybody, cappers and columnists included. The point isn't to get rich. It's to make Sunday afternoons a little more interesting, and if you beat the closing line along the way, pour one out for the old-timers.

Do your reading. The MSN piece is a fine place to start. Then make your own picks and live with them, which is half the fun anyway.
