Alan Ritchson is heading back to theaters. The Reacher star's new action thriller Runner, co-starring Owen Wilson, opens September 11, 2026. Collider confirmed the release date this week.

For Ritchson it's a notable move. He's the guy Amazon built Reacher around, and leading a movie is a different test entirely: no season-long arc to lean on, just one film that has to work in about two hours. As a developer I know that feeling, shipping a small standalone thing after years inside one giant codebase. Everything you took for granted, you now have to build yourself.

Owen Wilson is the weirder bit of casting, and I mean that as a compliment. His laid-back delivery next to Ritchson's granite-jawed minimalism is a tonal pairing you don't see often. Either it clicks like a classic buddy-action two-hander or it collapses into two actors acting in separate movies. No in-between. The genre doesn't allow lukewarm.

Both an official trailer and a final trailer are already out, so you can judge the tone yourself instead of taking my word for it. That's rare this close to release, and usually means the studio is confident in what it has.

The open question is whether Runner is actually good or just well-marketed. But a two-hander cast, an action-thriller premise, and a September release usually signals a studio that knows exactly what kind of movie it made. Mid-budget action lives or dies on execution, not spectacle.

I'll be watching the reviews when they land. And if you're a Reacher fan who's been waiting for Ritchson to carry a theatrical runtime on his own, mark your calendar for September 11.
