I've been watching the robot vacuum space for a while now and I keep coming back to the same thought. Most of these little pucks that zip around your living room are wildly overpriced for what they actually do. So when I saw that Aldi Ireland is launching a robot vacuum for €99.99, available nationwide starting Thursday, August 20, I did a little double-take.
A hundred euros. For a robot vacuum. That is the kind of price that makes you sit up.
Now let me be clear about something right up front. I haven't gotten my hands on this particular model yet so I can't tell you whether it maps your rooms beautifully or gets confused by a table leg and gives up entirely. What I can tell you is that the price alone is worth talking about, because it is something I've been waiting to see in this category for a long time.
Robot vacuums have been one of those products where the ceiling keeps getting higher and the floor stays stubbornly expensive. You can spend well over a thousand euros on a top-tier model with lidar navigation, self-emptying docks and mopping functions that are genuinely impressive. My granddaughter Jess has been asking me whether she should get one for her apartment and I keep telling her to wait. Not because the technology isn't ready, but because the value has been out of whack for anyone who just wants clean floors without a mortgage-style commitment.
I remember when a basic Roomba cost the better part of €500 and spent most of its time bumping into walls like a confused beetle. We've come a long way from those days but the budget end of the market has been a bit of a wasteland. Cheap robot vacuums existed, sure, but they were mostly no-name brands sold on questionable websites with manuals that read like they were run through a translator three times over.
Aldi putting a robot vacuum in its famous middle aisle changes that conversation. For those of you not familiar with the Aldi middle aisle phenomenon, it's that magical section of the store where you go in for milk and bread and somehow walk out with a camping stove, a yoga mat, and now apparently a robot vacuum. It's chaotic and wonderful and I love it.
The fact that Aldi is backing this with their national retail presence matters. You're buying from a store with a return counter, not a faceless online listing. That alone makes a €100 robot vacuum a completely different proposition than the sketchy option I mentioned earlier.
Now I want to be realistic with you. At this price, you shouldn't expect room mapping, app scheduling with no-go zones, or the kind of suction power that pulls pet hair out of deep carpet. This is almost certainly a bump-and-go model with basic scheduling and a dustbin you empty yourself. And you know what, for a lot of people that is perfectly fine. Technology should work for you by solving actual problems, and if your actual problem is "I want the kitchen floor swept without thinking about it" then a basic robot vacuum at a hundred euros might be exactly the right tool.
I've been keeping an eye on the Dyson vacuum launches from a few weeks back for comparison, and the price gap between premium and budget in this category is enormous. We're talking about a ten-to-one difference. Not everyone needs the ten.
If you're in Ireland and you've been robot-vacuum-curious but could never justify the spend, this might be your moment. August 20, Aldi, middle aisle. Just maybe get there early, because these things tend to vanish fast.
I'll see if I can track one down myself. If I do, you'll get the full rundown, pet hair test and all.
