Bad news for anyone hoping to clear bugs off the Sulaco on a Switch 2 this fall: Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 has officially been delayed to early 2027 on Nintendo's platform. ComingSoon broke the news, and while delays are never fun in the moment, I think this one might work out for the best.

If you missed the first game, Fireteam Elite was a genuinely pleasant surprise in 2021. A three-player co-op shooter set in the Alien universe, it leaned hard into the fantasy of being a Colonial Marine with two buddies, watching motion trackers and screaming when the blip got close. It wasn't trying to reinvent anything. It just wanted you and your fireteam to sweat together in a dark corridor. And that's a formula I'll show up for every single time.

ComingSoon doesn't spell out a reason for the delay, so I'm left speculating like everyone else. My money's on the usual suspects: polish, timing, and the release calendar. Fall 2026 is an absolute warzone, and GTA 6 is going to dominate the conversation through the holidays, in my opinion. Every game that can slip to 2027 probably should, and a Switch 2 port of a mid-size co-op shooter was never going to win a head-to-head with Los Santos.

Co-op games live and die on population, though. I've said this before with RuneScape: Dragonwilds, a built-in player base is what keeps a multiplayer game from becoming a ghost town three weeks after launch. If Fireteam Elite 2 shipped on Switch 2 in the shadow of GTA 6, matchmaking queues would thin out fast, reviews would reflect dead lobbies rather than the actual game, and the port would get a reputation it might never shake. Launching in early 2027, when the calendar should be quieter and Switch 2 owners will be hungry for something new, gives the community a real chance to form.

There's the port quality question too. Switch 2 has been punching above its weight, but a co-op shooter with swarms of Xenomorphs is exactly the kind of game that needs a stable frame rate more than it needs pretty lighting. I'd rather wait a few extra months for a version that runs clean in handheld mode than get a choppy port on time. We've all bought the rushed version of a game before, and we've all regretted it.

One caveat worth stating plainly: the reporting we have only covers the Switch 2 delay. Whether other platforms are affected isn't confirmed in what I've seen, so check with the publisher before assuming anything about your platform of choice.

I get the frustration, I've been there. My guild in FFXIV has a running joke that any game we're excited for ships "eventually, maybe, check back after the maintenance." Delays sting when you've got a squad ready to go. But a co-op game with no one to co-op with stings worse. Early 2027 it is, and my fireteam will be there with motion trackers ready.

What about you? Would you rather a game ship on time and rough, or late and right? That debate never gets old in my Discord.
