Apple just dropped the trailer for its new mountaineering documentary and I watched it twice back to back, which is rare for me and docs about things that could kill you. Per the AOL writeup, the film heads to Apple TV+ with an official release date now locked in, so this one's on the calendar.

Mountaineering docs are a weird genre bc they all share the same baseline question, which is basically "why would you do this." And the good ones never really answer it, they just show you footage so harrowing the question stops mattering. From the trailer this looks like it's in that camp. Lots of wind. Lots of sheer drop-offs. Lots of people calmly describing situations that would end me.

I won't pretend I'm a climber. My most intense vertical experience was the escalator being broken at my gym. But these movies work on everyone, I think because the stakes are so nakedly real. No CGI, no third-act cheat. Either they summit or they don't, and sometimes the mountain just decides for them.

Apple TV+ has been quietly good on the documentary front for a while now, and this feels like the kind of pickup they do well: one subject, huge visuals, a story that basically writes itself as long as you point the camera at the right part of the mountain. Also worth saying... docs like this are the single best argument for watching on the biggest screen you can find. Your phone will not do this justice and the trailer already makes that obvious.

No spoilers on specifics here since the trailer does that job better than I could, but if you liked Free Solo or 14 Peaks, this is straight up your lane. And if you're the type who gets dizzy on ladders, maybe watch with something soft nearby to stare at during the vertigo shots. There are several. I counted.

I'll be watching when it lands, partly for the film and partly bc my grandma raised me on a steady diet of "people pushing machines and bodies past their limits" and this feels adjacent to that whole ethos. Mountains instead of circuit boards, same energy.

Anyway. Trailer's out, date's set, add it to your watchlist before the algorithm buries it under six true crime series. that's my whole PSA for the day.
