Apple TV is going bigger than usual this October, and honestly it's about time. The service has always had that "few things, but they're REALLY good" reputation, which works great until you burn through Severance and Ted Lasso and find yourself scrolling at 11 p.m. with nothing to show for it. This month there's actual depth to the lineup, starting with Matchbox The Movie and the new series Small Prophets, per Yahoo Entertainment's breakdown.

Matchbox is the one I'm most curious about. It's built off the classic die-cast toy cars, the ones that lived in a shoebox in basically every garage in America for a few decades, and turning toy IP into movies is a coin flip we've all watched get flipped a lot lately. For every Barbie there's a... well, you know the ones. But a car movie with a sense of humor about itself could land, and the premise leaves room for actual stunt work instead of pure CG sheen. I'll watch anything with real cars doing real things. That's a bias, sure, but it's an honest one.

Small Prophets is the other headline grabber, and it's the kind of thing Apple tends to do well with: smaller-scaled, character-first, the sort of show that would get buried on a service dumping 900 new titles a week. A thinner library has its perks. When Apple pushes something, you can actually hear it.

There's more beyond those two. Returning shows are part of the mix too, with Sisters Grimm back on October 2, and the slate runs deep enough that if you've been riding the month-to-month subscription rotation like I have, this is one of those months where keeping Apple TV active past a single weekend actually pencils out. I've said it before, the whole point of rotating is knowing when NOT to cancel, and October looks like a keep month.

Whether Matchbox becomes a franchise starter or a one-and-done curiosity, at least it's arriving on a service that's clearly putting more on the table than usual. Sometimes that's all you need to know before you hit play.

If you want the full rundown of everything landing this month, dates included, check out Yahoo Entertainment's complete October guide. I'll have a proper verdict once Matchbox and Small Prophets are actually watchable, and yes, I still owe you the Animals verdict from a couple weeks back. It's coming. The couch backlog is real.
