Well, Apple finally did the thing we've been asking for. The new AirPods 5 are up for pre-order following yesterday's Surprise and Shine event, and they come with active noise cancellation at the same $129 price the AirPods 4 charged without it. You can read the full rundown over at Gizmodo.
Stop and think about that for a second. The AirPods 4 with ANC launched at $179, and the version without sat at $129. Now the standard AirPods 5 gets noise cancellation built in at $129. No tiers, no upsell. When Apple quietly absorbs a feature like this instead of charging extra for it, that's worth paying attention to.
I remember when noise cancellation meant buying giant over-ear headphones that swallowed your whole head and cost as much as a car payment. Now it fits in a bud the size of a jellybean. My granddaughter Jess keeps telling me I don't need ANC because I "just listen to podcasts in the kitchen," but she doesn't know what my blender sounds like at 7 a.m.
For those keeping score at home, the AirPods line has been overdue for this. Samsung and Google have been shipping ANC in their mid-range earbuds for a couple of generations now, and Apple holding it back as a premium feature was starting to look a little stubborn. My guess is the parts finally got cheap enough, or the competition got close enough, that someone in Cupertino decided the math didn't work anymore. Probably both, knowing how these decisions usually go.
The event brought out more than just earbuds, naturally. Apple never rolls out a single product when a whole stage is available. Pre-orders for several of the announced gadgets are live now, with the usual release rhythm: order this week, have it in your hands within a week or two after. If history holds, we'll see reviews landing a day or two before the shipping date.
Now, should you pre-order? If your current earbuds are dying, or you've been limping along with wired EarPods like it's 2014, this is a genuinely good moment. ANC at $129 was the missing piece, and the AirPods 4 without it always felt like the slightly disappointing little sibling. If your AirPods 4 are working fine though, sit tight. Technology should work for you, and a pair of earbuds that still pairs, still plays, and still holds a charge doesn't need replacing just because a newer number exists.
The one thing I'd watch before clicking buy: the fine print on battery life with ANC switched on. Noise cancellation eats power, and I want to see real-world numbers rather than the optimistic lab figures before declaring victory. Apple's quoted hours tend to be closer to honest than most, but "up to" is doing a lot of work in any spec sheet.
I'll have more once these land on my desk and I've worn them through a few grocery runs and at least one loud restaurant. That's the real test, not a press release. Until then, the pre-order button is there if you need it, and for once, it's not charging you extra for the good feature.
