Marvel just gave us the closest thing to a roll call we're going to get before Avengers: Doomsday arrives, and I've been staring at them longer than I'd like to admit. The studio dropped a batch of new character posters for the movie, each one done up like a comic book cover, and The Direct has the full gallery if you want to do what I did and go through them one by one like a checklist.

The setup is simple. Every hero gets their own comic-style cover, and Thor leads the pack, Mjolnir raised, mid-charge, looking like he's about to ruin somebody's afternoon. Reed Richards stands behind him in the same poster, and that tells you a lot about how Marvel is framing this thing. This isn't one team standing in a line. It's a pile of universes crashing into each other.

Which is really the story these posters are telling. Per The Direct's gallery, Giant-Man and Professor X are among the heroes getting covers too, so you've got MCU veterans standing shoulder to shoulder with Fox-era legacy characters and Fantastic Four newcomers, all rendered in this chunky comic-cover style that makes the whole roster feel like a crossover event issue from the mid-90s. You remember, the ones with the holographic foil covers your local shop still has a stack of. I actually think it's a smart visual choice, because Doomsday is basically a comic book mega-event blown up to movie scale, so why not dress the marketing like one?

In my gut, this feels connected to something I've been noticing all year, which is that the Spider-Man: Brand New Day frenzy seems to have people wandering back into comic book stores, and I'd bet Marvel knows which way the wind is blowing. That's a hunch, not a statistic, to be clear. But posters that look like variant covers are catnip for exactly that audience, myself included. I'd hang the Thor one on my wall today.

What the posters don't answer is the question everybody actually has: how do all these characters fit into one movie? The cast list for Doomsday has been absurd since the day it was announced, and individual posters for basically the whole roster sort of confirms it. Nobody gets to be the main character here, or everybody does, depending on how you look at it. Thor front and center is the loudest statement in the batch. He's been away from the Avengers side of things long enough that putting him at the tip of the spear feels deliberate, like Marvel reminding us the original big three energy still lives in this franchise, even now.

There's also the timeline question. I've been wondering for a while whether this movie sticks to its date, and I'll admit a marketing push this big reads to me like they're locking things in rather than moving them. You don't print a whole gallery of posters for a movie drifting in limbo. That's my read, nothing more, so take it for whatever it's worth.

But let's be real about what actually matters here. Professor X getting a poster suggests whoever's carrying that mantle gets a real moment, Giant-Man getting a poster suggests we're probably getting some size-changing spectacle on an IMAX scale, and Thor charging with the hammer means somebody on the other side of that swing is having a very bad day. Those are the three things I wrote down after my first pass through the gallery, and I stand by all of them.

If you want to kill twenty minutes this weekend, go through the posters and try to pick your favorite. Mine's the Thor one, no contest, but I'm a sucker for a good hammer pose and I've never pretended otherwise. Jess would probably pick whoever has the best color palette, she notices things like that, and she's usually right. Drop yours in the comments. I'm curious whether anyone's going to bat for the deep cuts over the heavy hitters.
