So Marvel just dropped the kind of murky Friday news nobody asked for. According to a new report, a release date change for Avengers: Doomsday is being discussed, and the details are fuzzier than a first-draft post-credits scene.

What's actually on the books: Doomsday is currently scheduled for December 18, 2026, after Marvel already moved it once from its original May 1, 2026 slot. The reported wrinkle now is that another shift is on the table, with competition and IMAX screen availability cited as the reasons. Beyond that, the reporting doesn't give us much, no target date, no direction, just that conversations are happening.

I get why any date talk around this movie stings. Doomsday is supposed to be the biggest MCU event in years, the kind of movie where everyone in the multiverse saga shows up and the whole thing snaps into focus. That's a lot of moving parts. And when you've got that many schedules, sets and post-production pipelines tangled together, date shuffling feels less like a shock and more like physics.

There's also a case that a calendar change, in either direction, is fine. These giant crossover movies live or die on the details, and a rushed Avengers movie is a bad Avengers movie. We've all watched a blockbuster or two that clearly needed more time in the oven and got shoved out anyway. And if the issue is IMAX screens, that tracks with what I've been seeing all summer, because the giant-format calendar is a knife fight right now and everyone wants those screens.

What I don't know yet is what this does to the rest of the calendar, and I'd be lying if I pretended otherwise. Marvel's slate tends to be a carefully stacked Jenga tower, so in my experience these moves usually come with follow-up shuffling. But that's speculation from a guy who watches too much of this stuff, not something anyone's confirmed. We'll see what Disney says.

So hold off on the red marker until something's official. December 18, 2026 is the date as it stands. In the meantime, maybe this is your sign to finally catch up on whatever corner of the MCU you've been putting off. What are you queuing up this weekend instead?
