Bad news for anyone who had a pink circle on their calendar: Barbie 2 isn't coming when we thought. According to ComingSoon.net, the sequel's release date has been delayed, and the shakeup at Mattel is the stated reason.

That's about all the hard detail we have right now. New leadership at the top, a release date that slid, and no lengthy explanation attached. And that's kind of how these delays always go: the announcement is one sentence long, and the speculation fills the other ninety-nine.

What we can say is that whenever a company changes bosses, everything already on the calendar tends to get a second look. I don't know the specifics of what happened inside Mattel, and I'm not going to pretend I do. The source just says new leadership, delay, done. Sometimes that's all you get, and it's frustrating for the rest of us, because the first Barbie was a genuine phenomenon and people have been waiting on a follow-up with real patience.

I won't re-litigate the whole thing here. If you saw it, you already know. If you didn't, I'm not sure what year you were living in, but welcome back.

No new date has been announced, at least as of this writing. Whenever it lands, I'll be there. A movie that big earns the benefit of the doubt, even when the calendar keeps moving on you.

In the meantime, the waiting game continues. I've been through enough delayed sequels at this point to know the drill: refresh the release calendar every few months, act surprised when it moves again, repeat.

What about you, are you still excited for Barbie 2, or has the wait cooled you off? Drop it in the comments. I'm still in, though I've said that before and then watched the sequel on a plane six months late.
