City builder fans, circle October 15. Beyond These Stars hits 1.0 that day on Steam, GOG, the Epic Games Store, and, in a nice surprise, PC Game Pass on day one. MSN has the full rundown, and it's the kind of launch plan I like seeing from a smaller studio.

If this one hasn't crossed your radar yet, the hook is great: you're building a civilization on the back of a giant spacefaring whale. Your city grows across its back as it swims through the cosmos, so your town's layout literally travels with you. Call it Banished on a cosmic whale. I mean that as a compliment. Balancing Monkey Games is developing, Hooded Horse is publishing, and if you know anything about Hooded Horse's catalog you know they've made their name on strategy and city builder titles that respect your time.

Day-one PC Game Pass inclusion is the part that changes the math for a lot of players. I said as much when I covered the Game Pass additions earlier this month: unless you need to own a game forever, subscription access is the cheapest way to find out if a city builder clicks for you. City builders are a genre where the first ten hours tell you almost everything. If the pacing gels, you'll sink 80 hours in. If it doesn't, you've lost an evening.

There's a retro angle worth a second, too. Civilization on a wandering giant is straight out of the SNES era's playbook, back when studios couldn't afford huge budgets so they bought weird premises instead. I want to say it was Treasure of the Rudras, or maybe the vibe of some of those Falcom PC-98 titles, where the setting did the heavy lifting because the sprites couldn't. Beyond These Stars carries that torch with a modern coat of paint and the premise still holds up.

What 1.0 actually adds over the current build remains to be seen, so I'd hold off on assumptions until the launch notes land. New players don't need to worry about any of that, though. October 15 is a clean on-ramp: full release, all platforms at once, and a subscription option if you'd rather try before you buy.

October's shaping up to be busy, and a cozy city builder on a cosmic whale, on Game Pass, with essentially no risk? I can think of worse ways to spend an evening.
