Black Panther 3 just got real interesting. David Jonsson is stepping into the lead as T'Challa's son, with Ryan Coogler back writing and directing, per MSN's reporting. December 15, 2028. That's a comfortable runway for Marvel and Coogler to figure out whatever this next chapter becomes.

If you caught FX's Industry, you know Jonsson. He was one of the standouts on that show, the kind of actor who made you sit up a little straighter whenever he was on screen. Like he was always thinking three moves ahead of the scene. Even on a single pass the guy left a mark.

He also turned heads in Alien: Romulus back in 2024. That performance alone and I was like, this guy's going places.

Now he's stepping into one of the biggest franchises on the planet.

The casting makes sense when you think about what Coogler built with these films. The first Black Panther was a cultural event, a superhero movie that actually had something to say about identity and legacy and what it means to lead. Wakanda Forever carried the impossible weight of Chadwick Boseman's passing and somehow found grace in grief. Now the trilogy moves forward with a new generation, literally, with T'Challa's son taking center stage.

What's interesting about Jonsson is he's not an obvious action star, and that's the point. Boseman wasn't either before he put on the suit. He was a dramatic actor with theater roots and a quiet intensity. Jonsson has a similar toolkit. He can do the heavy emotional lifting that makes these movies resonate beyond the fight scenes.

No plot details yet, which is fine. We don't need them. December 2028 is a long way off, and Coogler has earned the benefit of the doubt twice over.

It could also be another Marvel movie that feels like it came off a content assembly line. Always the risk. But Coogler hasn't missed yet, and Jonsson is a genuinely exciting choice. This doesn't read like safe casting. It reads deliberate.

December 15, 2028. Mark it down, or don't, because we'll be talking about this plenty between now and then.
