MSN put together a list of the 10 greatest games that never took home Game of the Year, and it's the kind of list that starts arguments in every Discord server it gets pasted into. GOTY is one night, one voter pool, one year. Greatness is forever. Sometimes the two just don't line up.

Bloodborne is the obvious headline grabber. FromSoftware's gothic nightmare lost to The Witcher 3 in 2015, and people are still mad about it. I get it. Bloodborne is a whole mood, a whole aesthetic, a whole community that formed around shared suffering and triumph. It didn't need a trophy to become a religion. But you can feel the wound whenever it comes up, a decade later.

Super Mario Odyssey is another one that stings. It lost to Breath of the Wild in 2017, which is less an insult and more terrible luck, like dropping your best album the same year as Thriller. Odyssey is joyful in a way very few games manage. And losing to a fellow Nintendo masterpiece doesn't make it less great, it just means the calendar was cruel.

The list covers the usual suspects from the modern era, the near-misses and the robbed, the games that defined years without collecting the big trophy for them. And reading it, you notice a pattern: the games we still talk about, the ones with active communities and speedrun scenes and mod scenes, aren't always the ones holding the little statue. Communities decide longevity, not award shows.

I've been around enough game-of-the-year seasons to know the award matters, don't get me wrong. It moves copies, it funds studios, it changes careers. But the games that last are the ones people keep coming back to on their own. Nobody boots up a ten-year-old game because it won an award. They boot it up because a friend said you have to play this.

Anyway, the list is worth a scroll, if only to see which of your personal robbed favorites made the cut. Bloodborne fans, this is your annual permission to be upset again.

What's the game you'd put on this list that never gets mentioned? I always have one, and it changes depending on the year I'm feeling nostalgic for. Drop it in the comments, I genuinely want to build the community's version of this list.
