Okay this is the kind of thing you stop scrolling for. The new season of Austin City Limits kicked off with Brandi Carlile as the guest of honor, and the show did not mess around, because they brought out Bonnie Raitt to sing two duets with her. Two! You can watch both performances over at MSN.

If you know anything about either of these two, you already know how this goes. Carlile has spent her whole career being the artist that other artists lose their minds over, the one who gets called up on stage by everyone from Joni Mitchell (JONI) to Elton John. And Raitt is, like, the blueprint. Slide guitar, that voice, fifty years of doing it exactly her way. Putting those two on the same stage is an event, straight up.

The setup is that Carlile is the one being celebrated for the season premiere. It's her episode, her songs, her night. But the duets with Raitt are the moment everyone's going to be clipping and posting for the next week and honestly? fair enough. When two voices that good share a mic you kind of just have to put your phone down and watch.

What I love about Austin City Limits doing this is the whole vibe of the show hasn't changed in decades, which is the whole point. Still one stage, one crowd, no nonsense. My grandma used to have it on in the background constantly when I was little so maybe I'm biased, but there's a reason it's the longest-running music program in TV history. They don't chase trends, they just get great people in a room and press record.

And then look at who they picked to open the season with. Carlile's one of maybe five artists working right now where the word "songwriter" actually means something. If you've somehow never gone deep on her catalog, start with "The Story" and then just keep going, you'll get it.

No word yet on the rest of the season's lineup but if the premiere has Bonnie Raitt showing up for harmonies, the bar is officially somewhere in the stratosphere. Somebody at that show knows exactly what they're doing.
