Well, we probably all saw this coming, but it still stings to type it: Build a Rocket Boy, the studio behind MindsEye, has entered administration, and per MSN's report the studio now faces closure or acquisition. The developer behind what MSN calls the most lambasted game of 2025 is staring down the two least fun words in the games business, and the whole bizarre saga looks like it's finally winding toward an ending.

If you missed this whole thing because you were, sensibly, playing other games, let me stick to what's on the record. MindsEye was Build a Rocket Boy's big swing. It drew intense criticism on release and picked up that most-lambasted-of-2025 reputation, a label the report repeats without much ceremony. Whatever the full story of the development turns out to be, the studio is in administration and its future gets decided by whoever ends up holding the keys.

Administration, for those of us who don't speak corporate, is the UK process where an outside party steps in to sort out whether a company can be rescued, sold, or wound down. Take that as my plain-English gloss rather than legal advice, but it's why the report frames the stakes as closure or acquisition. Someone either buys this studio and its tech, or it goes away. My own guess, and to be clear this is me speculating, is that a middle path exists too, a downsized studio surviving under new owners, but the reporting itself only names the two outcomes.

The sad part is that actual people are caught in this. Whatever you think of the game, the developers poured years into MindsEye, and I've been adjacent to that kind of helplessness before. Back in my raid-leading days a friend's whole team got gutted mid-expansion and the decisions all happened above our heads. Those folks aren't the ones who made the calls that got us here.

I keep coming back to the community angle on this one. For all the dunking, there were genuinely funny, strange, communal moments in the MindsEye aftermath: the clip compilations, the shared disbelief, the people who bought it anyway and found things to love in the wreckage. That's how modern game launches go now, the mockery and the weird affection arrive together.

Whether the ending here is an acquisition or a shutdown, MindsEye's place in the 2025 story is locked in. Launching rough in this market is close to unrecoverable, and the games themselves are only ever half the saga. The other half is people.

Did any of you actually play MindsEye? I knew one person in my Discord who defended it to the death and part of me respected the commitment. Drop your war stories in the comments, I read all of them.
