Another week, another pile of boxes I wish would show up on my doorstep. The folks at MSN rounded up a whole range of new gadgets that hit the market over the past few days, and it's a nicely mixed bag: a camera, a stack of laptops, a new phone, and plenty more besides.

Let me start with the big one, because the Canon EOS R8 Mark II is the launch I'm genuinely curious about. I remember when stepping up from a point-and-shoot to a "real" camera meant remortgaging the house, so any new mid-range mirrorless body gets my attention these days. I haven't seen full specs or pricing yet, so I'll hold off on verdicts, but a Mark II refresh of a well-liked camera is exactly the kind of launch I want to spend real time with before saying more.

On the laptop side, Asus refreshed its Vivobook lineup, and I want to give these a proper mention because Vivobooks have long been my go-to suggestion for nieces, nephews, and anyone heading off to school. That's my general affection for the line talking, mind you, not a verdict on these brand-new models which I obviously haven't touched. But the dependable middle of the market deserves more applause than it gets, and I'll be watching to see whether these new Vivobooks carry on that tradition. Marcus could tell you exactly what's changed under the hood, and I'll be curious to read his take if he digs in.

The Oppo K14 Lite is the new phone of the bunch, and I'll admit my soft spot for phones aimed at everyday people. Not everyone needs a thousand-dollar flagship with a camera that can photograph the moon. Some people need a phone that makes calls, runs WhatsApp, holds a charge all day, and doesn't fall apart. If the K14 Lite delivers on the basics it'll do more real good for more people than any foldable ever will. My granddaughter Jess would tell me I'm being an old fogey about this, and she wouldn't be entirely wrong.

The rest of the roundup covers gaming laptops, audio gear, and assorted accessories, and rather than repeat the whole list, I'd say go browse the full piece yourself.

My standing rule applies to all of it, of course. Useful wins every single time. Before you preorder any of this, ask yourself what actual problem it solves in your life, because a gadget that works against you is just an expensive paperweight with firmware. The R8 Mark II solves a real problem if your current camera is aging out. A new Vivobook solves one if yours is on its last legs. Everything else? Wait for the reviews. Preferably mine.
