OK so Paramount finally did it. Crawl 2 has an official release date, per Yahoo, and the Alexandre Aja alligator sequel with Emily Rudd and Mason Gooding hits theaters July 16, 2027. Mark it. Midsummer 2027 belongs to the gators.

If you missed the first Crawl in 2019, genuinely what were you doing. It's one of the tightest creature features of the last decade: Kaya Scodelario stuck in a flooding Florida house during a hurricane while giant alligators treat the crawl space like an all-you-can-eat buffet. Short, no fat on it, and a scene where someone beats a gator with a gun that still lives in my head rent free. My grandma watched it with me once and said the water effects were more impressive than half the tech demos she'd seen that year, which is the highest compliment a horror movie has ever gotten in that house.

Details on the sequel are still thin, which is kind of refreshing in a world where we see whole movies in trailers now. We know Rudd and Gooding lead it, we know it's staying in the killer-alligator business, and producer Sam Raimi has said the sequel moves out of the Florida swamps and into New York City. That's the one thing giving me pause, because the original worked BECAUSE of the claustrophobia. One house, rising water, teeth. Expand the map to a whole city and you risk losing the pressure cooker thing that made it special. But Aja knows tight spaces, so I'm choosing faith.

And the casting is good? Emily Rudd was great in Fear Street, and these are people who know exactly what kind of movie they're in and play it straight without being boring about it. That's the whole secret with creature features. The actors have to act like the gator is a real problem and not a promo opportunity.

No trailer yet, obviously, it's 2027, we'll be lucky to get a first look before next year. But I'm putting it on the calendar now because I've been burned before by waiting on these things. Is streaming a valid way to watch it? Obviously yes, I've said that a hundred times. But a flood-horror movie with big screen water and big screen gators? That's a theater night. Popcorn, cold AC, screaming at strangers. July 16, 2027. The gators are coming back and I couldn't be happier about it.
