A new studio called Crooked Cats just dropped the announcement trailer for Nightbound, and my tactical-RPG brain is already buzzing. It's a turn-based tactical narrative-driven game, which is catnip for anyone who spent way too many hours agonizing over grid positioning in XCOM or fell hard for the character writing in something like Baldur's Gate 3.

The reveal trailer doesn't give away too much, which works in its favor. You get atmosphere, mood, just enough of a glimpse at the tactical combat to know that positioning and decision-making are going to matter. No release window yet, no platform confirmation. Just the vibe and a name to start watching.

Turn-based tactical games live or die on two things, and it feels like every developer knows this but only some actually nail it. The combat has to have weight behind every move, where each turn feels like a puzzle you're solving under pressure. And the narrative has to make you care about the characters you're moving around that board. If you don't care about them, the best combat system in the world starts feeling like a spreadsheet with better art.

Crooked Cats is a new name to me, and I think a lot of us will be keeping tabs on them after this. A first project with this much ambition, leaning into both tactical depth and narrative weight, is the kind of swing that either introduces you to your next favorite studio or teaches them lessons the hard way. Either way I'm paying attention.

No word yet on platforms, release timing, or anything beyond the initial reveal. But if you're the type who plans out your squad composition three encounters in advance, this one's going on the watchlist. I'll be keeping an eye out for the next drop, because the announcement trailer is really just the opening move here.
