VICE TV is back in the cage. Dark Side of the Cage, the MMA docuseries that basically exists to ruin your image of fighters you grew up watching, just kicked off season 2 with an episode called 'The Mayhem of Jason Miller'. and yeah. the title is doing a LOT of work.

if you missed season 1, the premise is simple and kind of brutal: each episode grabs one figure from MMA history and digs into everything the highlight reels don't show. injuries, money problems, promoters, the aftermath. same energy as Dark Side of the Ring but MMA, and if you know anything about that world behind the scenes... there is no shortage of material. like, none.

Jason "Mayhem" Miller as a season 2 opener is honestly a great pick. if you were watching MMA in the late 2000s and early 2010s the guy was everywhere. Strikeforce, the UFC, hosting MTV's Bully Beatdown, the whole flamboyant-entrance thing, actually funny in interviews. he felt more like a character than an athlete, and I mean that in the best way.

and then the story turns, the way it always does on this show. Miller's post-fighting years got dark in a very public way, arrests and mental health struggles playing out in headlines and on social media. the episode covers all of it. based on season 1, VICE tends to handle this stuff with more care than you'd expect from a show with "dark side" in the title, which matters when the subject is a real person still living through it.

to be clear, I haven't watched the premiere yet so this isn't a review. but season 1 was better than it had any right to be. my grandma always told me the best documentary work lets the subject talk instead of telling you how to feel, and that's basically the whole show. long interviews, archival footage, people from the fighter's orbit filling in the gaps.

the season 2 premiere clip is up now over at MSN if you want a taste before committing to the full episode.

even a casual MMA fan can get into this easy, and if you're not a fan at all the human story is the actual hook. Mayhem Miller was one of the biggest personalities the sport ever had. where it went from there... that's the episode.
