Quick one today because I think it's actually useful. A new study found that when you eat your first meal of the day is tied to your chances of dying early, and honestly the timing piece matters more than most of us assumed.

People who ate their first meal later in the day had higher risks of cardiovascular disease and overall death compared to people who ate breakfast earlier in the morning. The standout habit was eating your first meal earlier in the morning, and that group came out ahead.

Before anybody spirals, this is observational research. It can't prove that waiting until noon to eat is what's doing damage. Late eaters also tended to have other stuff going on: different sleep schedules, different diets, more irregular habits overall. But the timing link held up even after the researchers accounted for age, weight, income, and what people were actually eating, which is why I'm bothering to write about it.

The working theory is about circadian rhythm, which is a fancy way of saying your body has a schedule. The same meal gets processed differently depending on when you eat it: morning versus early afternoon are not the same thing to your body, even if the plate looks identical. Nutrition researchers have been saying for years that meal timing matters, and this lines up with that.

Now some real talk, because I've been the guy this study is describing. For most of my twenties my "breakfast" was an energy drink mid-morning followed by whatever fast food was closest to my office in the early afternoon. I wasn't skipping breakfast on purpose I just didn't eat like a person with a functioning schedule. If that's where you are right now, no shame. You're exactly who this info is for, not who it's pointed at.

The practical move here is small: just pull your first meal earlier. Doesn't have to be a full sit-down breakfast. Greek yogurt, a banana, some eggs you boiled the night before, leftover rice and whatever protein's in the fridge. The timing finding held regardless of what people ate, but obviously a breakfast with some protein and fiber beats a pastry on its own merits.

If you do intermittent fasting with a late window, I'm not telling you to quit. I tried IF myself, wrote about it, it has real uses. But if your eating window starts in the early afternoon every day, this is one more data point suggesting your body might prefer an earlier one. Maybe shift the window so it starts mid-morning instead of midday. Meet yourself where you are and nudge it.

Pull your first meal a bit earlier tomorrow if you can. Unlike most longevity advice, this one's free.
