Another week, another pile of gadgets landing in my inbox and feed. I went through this week's roundup of notable releases so you don't have to, and a few of these genuinely caught my eye. Not all of them, mind you. But a few.

I've been doing this long enough to remember when a "gadget roundup" meant three CD players and a pager. Now it's everything from smart locks to handheld gaming machines to vacuums that cost more than my first car. My granddaughter Jess keeps telling me I need to be more selective about what I get excited over and she's usually right, which is mildly annoying.

The theme I keep returning to is simple: technology should work for you. Solve a real problem, save real time, make something you already do a little easier. The gadgets that do that earn a spot on the radar. The ones that just want to be connected for the sake of being connected can stay on the shelf.

What struck me about this batch is how practical most of it is. We're past the era of gadgets existing purely to be futuristic conversation pieces, thank goodness. Today's releases lean toward things you'd actually use on a Tuesday morning, which I find quietly reassuring. When I wrote about the launches flying under the radar this summer, I said the useful stuff wins every single time, and this week backs that up.

A few quick things I'd tell any family member who asked. Read the specs before you preorder anything, especially on brand-new releases where the first batch sometimes has quirks. And if something catches your eye, check whether last year's model is still available, because it's often 90 percent as good for half the price. That advice has saved my brother-in-law hundreds of dollars over the years, and he still doesn't listen to it about phones. Men.

I'm not going to pretend every item in the roundup is a must-have, because it isn't. Some of it is overpriced, some of it is overhyped, and one or two things solve problems I genuinely don't believe anyone has. But buried in there are a handful of items I'd happily recommend, and those are the ones worth your attention this weekend.

If you want to browse the full list yourself, the whole thing is worth a read over at the source. Take your time with it. And if something on the list tempts you, sleep on it first. The gadget will still be there tomorrow, and your wallet will thank you.
