Preseason Week 2 Friday games are done, and if you're not half-watching these exhibitions with a notes app open you're leaving edge on the table. I ran through the live takeaways from Friday's slate and there's real actionable stuff in there, not just "guy in a jersey ran fast" noise.
Disclaimer before Ray starts typing: yes, the eyeball test on preseason snap counts is 90 percent noise. But that other 10 percent, mostly role usage, target share in the first team's two drives and return work, actually projects. The numbers guys and the old heads agree on this one, even if Ray won't admit it.
What matters most from Week 2 is that this is the game where starters actually play. One series, two series, maybe a quarter. So when a back sees third-down work WITH the ones, or a slot receiver runs with the starting unit while a presumed starter watches, that's signal. Friday gave us a few of those and my advice is simple. Don't overreact to a 60-yard scamper from a fourth-stringer in the fourth quarter, but do overreact slightly to role clarity with the first-team offense. Slightly. I'm watching depth chart movement, not box scores.
On box scores: preseason passing numbers lie constantly. A 9-for-11 line built on checkdowns against backups tells you almost nothing. Route participation and target rate per route run when the starters are out there, that tells you something. I'd rather roster the guy who saw three targets on eight routes with the ones than the guy who caught six passes from a third-string QB in garbage time. Trust me on this.
Rookie wideouts and tight ends are where preseason usage pays the biggest fantasy dividends. Tight end especially, since the position is a wasteland after the top five or six guys and any rookie earning first-team red zone reps in August is worth a late flier. If any of Friday's rookie TEs ran routes with the starters, that's a name I'm stashing everywhere in the double-digit rounds. Same logic for incoming pass-catching backs in PPR.
One thing I say every August and will keep saying: your league mates are drafting off the same consensus board. I wrote this back on the 8th when I covered the SportsLine sleepers and busts, and Friday's games are exactly how you find the two or three names the board hasn't caught up to yet. A depth chart shakeup in preseason Week 2 usually takes a full week to filter into average draft position. That's your window.
Injury watch, because it's August and someone always breaks my heart (and my Sleeper app notifications). Whatever dings came out of Friday, treat soft-tissue stuff for skill players with a full week of skepticism before drafting them at cost. I got burned two years ago drafting a hamstring guy in round 3 and I track my receipts, that one's on the permanent record.
So what's the move this weekend? Keep a text file open during Saturday and Sunday's games. Starter snap counts, target distribution with the ones, any back getting third-down reps. Three columns, that's it. Boring, and it wins weeks in October.
Who'd you see Friday night that got you reaching in a mock? Drop the name, I want to know if I'm the only one weirdly high on preseason volume merchants this year.
