The Premier League is back this weekend, which means my phone is once again a nonstop scroll of price changes, ownership percentages and Twitter accounts that exist solely to post screenshots of expected goals. Fantasy Premier League is open for the 2026/27 season and Sporting Life has their annual selections and advice piece up, worth your time whether you're a seasoned manager or the person in your league who sets their team once in August and never looks at it again.

Opening gameweek of FPL is the closest thing sports has to a fresh FAAB budget. Everything is possibility and nothing is receipts yet. The smart play is building a structure that lets you react, not nailing the perfect squad on the first try. My rule for Gameweek 1: prioritize proven volume over pre-season hype, keep at least 0.5 in the bank for the first price rises, and don't blow your wildcard on a weekend where half the league is still shaking off rust.

My own board this week starts with the usual pillars: premium forwards priced at a premium for a reason, hunting value in the mid-range midfield, and the eternal question of whether you pay up at goalkeeper or stream the position. My answer this year: value keepers from teams with real clean sheet potential. I made peace with that after stubbornly paying up in goal two seasons ago, which cost me about 40 points and my dignity in the league chat.

What I actually care about this week is early ownership. If a player sits at 30 percent ownership or higher by the first deadline, they're template, and template picks can't win you anything. They can only lose you things. The edge lives in the 5-to-15 percent band, guys with real roles and real minutes but without the crowd attached yet. Deb would tell me I'm overthinking a game about assigning numbers to men kicking a ball, and she's occasionally, occasionally, right that I need to log off. Not this week though.

One tactical note I'll hammer every August: don't stack your bench with speculative punts in Gameweek 1. Rotations are coming with European fixtures, and the managers who survive September are the ones with playable subs, not lottery tickets. Ray Delgado keeps telling me fantasy is 80 percent luck anyway, and I keep running the numbers to prove him wrong, but the man's not entirely wrong about variance. He's just wrong about the other 20 percent.

Deadline is Friday, August 21. Set your team early, watch the press conferences, and for the love of xG don't captain anyone based on one pre-season friendly against a Championship under-23 side.

What's your Gameweek 1 captain? Reply in the comments, I'm tracking my calls this season, right and wrong. You know I keep my receipts.
