The MMO that refuses to die is at it again. Final Fantasy XI, a game that launched in 2002 on the PlayStation 2 of all things, is getting a major shot in the arm this September: Square Enix is removing the time limit on the free trial, letting new and returning players wander Vana'diel as long as they want without paying a subscription. The announcement came straight from senior Square Enix officials, and it lands in September 2026.

If you're wondering why anyone would care about a 24-year-old MMO, you never set foot in Vana'diel. FFXI was Square's first crack at online Final Fantasy, and it was brutal in the best way. Level caps that took months. Party mechanics that demanded actual communication. A world designed before quest markers ruined us all. I remember grinding in Valkurm Dunes on imported hardware with a Japanese dictionary open, because half the parties I joined at odd hours were Japanese players and you learned the auto-translate phrases fast or you didn't progress. That game taught me more functional Japanese than any textbook ever did.

The unlimited trial matters for a few reasons. FFXI is still running, still getting updates, and still has one of the most devoted communities in gaming. The barrier was never the game, it was the subscription ask: pay monthly for a decades-old title you're not sure you'll like. Removing the trial timer removes that excuse entirely. You can now take your time, hit the level cap available in the trial content, and decide if you want to commit.

It's also smart positioning. Square Enix has spent years nursing FFXI alongside FFXIV, and the two games serve different appetites. Nina Alvarez would tell you FFXIV is where the series' online soul lives now, and she's got the subscriber numbers on her side. But FFXI is the older, stranger, harsher sibling, and there's a flavor of Final Fantasy in there that XIV only gestures at. Slower combat built around skillchains and magic bursts. A world that doesn't explain itself. Storylines that, I'll die on this hill, rival the single-player entries. I genuinely think Chains of Promathia is one of the best expansions Square ever produced.

The timing fits a pattern, too. Square Enix knows the MMO nostalgia market is real. EverQuest and Ultima Online servers keep chugging along, classic WoW pulled huge numbers, and FFXI's own private server scene got big enough that Square had to acknowledge it. An unlimited free trial is the official answer to all of that: come play the real thing, on real servers, for free until you outgrow the trial content.

What the trial will actually include hasn't been fully spelled out yet. Previous versions capped your level and locked certain expansions, and I'd expect some version of that structure to remain. Even so, an unlimited clock on even a slice of Vana'diel is a genuine gift. Have you played it? If your answer is no, or if you bounced off it in 2004 because it chewed you up, September is your moment.

My advice: go in expecting an old MMO, not a modern one. FFXI will not hold your hand. It will make you work for everything. And somewhere around your first proper skillchain with a party of strangers who barely share a language, you'll get why people never left.
