Focus Entertainment has a new publishing deal, and racing fans should pay attention to this one. The publisher is teaming up with independent studio Maverick Games to release CLUTCH, an open-world racing game targeting a Spring 2027 launch on PS5, Xbox Series, and PC (via MSN).

If Maverick Games sounds familiar, it should. The studio was founded in 2022 by former Playground Games talent, the folks behind the Forza Horizon series, which is about the strongest pedigree an open-world racing team can have. When the people who basically defined the genre go off to build their own thing, you pay attention.

What we don't have yet is gameplay. The announcement gives us the shape of the thing: an open world built around driving, a Spring 2027 window, and Focus Entertainment on publishing duty.

And I like that pairing. Focus's catalog includes slow-burn community favorites like Snowrunner, a game whose player base is still out there hauling cargo years after launch. My read, and this is just my read, is that Focus gives its studios room to breathe instead of cramming them onto a yearly release treadmill. Maverick getting that kind of backing rather than the usual AAA crunch machine feels like a good sign for the game's health.

The open-world racing space has felt weirdly quiet lately. Forza Horizon keeps dominating, Burnout is a memory, and everything else sort of orbits those two. A new challenger with genuine Horizon DNA in the building is exactly the jolt the genre needs.

Now, nothing in the announcement mentions co-op or multiplayer, so don't take this as confirmed. It's just my hope, as someone who's spent too many nights in convoy chats to count. Open-world racers live or die on their social layer. The cruise nights. The shared discovery, the random convoy moments where a stranger honks and suddenly you're three hours deep into a mountain road together. If CLUTCH builds that community stuff in from the ground up instead of bolting it on later, it could carve out real space for itself, and that's what I'll be watching for as trailers start dropping.

Spring 2027 puts this one squarely on the calendar, even if it's a ways out. Between the pedigree and the publisher fit, CLUTCH just became one of the more interesting racing games in development. Drop your dream feature list in the Discord. You know I'll be reading it.
