Well, it's official. Forza Horizon 6 arrives on PS5 in January 2027, and preorders are live right now. If you'd told me a decade ago a Forza game would show up on PlayStation I'd have checked your drink, but here we are, and PlayStation players finally get a crack at the best open-world racing series running.

Two surprises came bundled with the announcement: exclusive preorder bonuses for the PS5 version, and a package that suggests Microsoft and Playground Games are treating this as a real platform launch, not a port of obligation. The details on what those bonuses actually unlock are over in the source piece, but the short version is PS5 players who commit early get content the Xbox crowd doesn't. A fun reversal of about twenty years of console history.

I covered this back in August when word got out the PS5 version might slip later than hoped, so I'm glad to see it land in January instead of drifting into the back half of 2027. That window is smart, too. January is dead-zone territory, a month where a big shiny racer has the road to itself while everything else recovers from the fall gauntlet.

Some context for the younger folks. When the original Forza Horizon dropped in 2012 it was the side project, a festival-themed spinoff of the serious mainline sim. Fourteen years later the spinoff is the crown jewel and Turn 10's numbered entries are the ones people shrug at. I want to say Horizon 4 was the moment it fully eclipsed its parent, but Horizon 3 is probably the safer pick. Either way the series has been on an absurd run of consecutive bangers, which almost never happens. Ask anyone who lived through the PS3 racing drought.

For PlayStation-only players who've never touched one: this is the one Xbox franchise that genuinely stings to miss. The handling walks a line between arcade looseness and sim credibility nobody else has matched, and the map design philosophy, where every hill and fence and dirt path exists to be launched off of, turns each entry into a year-long toybox.

The question now is what a same-day-ish PS5 launch does to Forza's identity. Xbox keeps insisting Game Pass day-one releases are the strategy, and putting a flagship on a rival box for full price tests whether the brand can carry a $70 sticker outside the subscription umbrella. January will tell us a lot.

Preorders are open if you already know. Me, I'll be there at launch, and yes, on the platform I've played every Horizon on since 2012. Some habits are worth keeping.
