Sony Santa Monica isn't making us wait as long as I expected. Collider confirmed that God of War Laufey is locked in for February 16, 2027. That's earlier than the late-2027 window a lot of us were assuming based on typical Sony development cycles.

The name itself tells you plenty about where the story is headed. Laufey. That's Farbauti's wife, Loki's mother. If you've been following the Norse saga that started with the 2018 reboot, you know Kratos's wife Faye was hiding a whole lot more than anyone realized. We spent two games unraveling the mystery of who she really was. Now we apparently get to see it firsthand, or at least deal with the fallout of every secret she left behind.

I keep thinking back to the original God of War on PS2. That game was pure rage and spectacle, a Greek revenge fantasy with blades and blood and not much subtlety. The series could have stayed that way forever and still sold copies. Sony Santa Monica took a hard left turn instead, aged Kratos into a father, and built something that had something to say about grief and regret and whether a person can outrun their own nature. God of War Ragnarok stuck the landing on the Norse arc about as well as anyone could have hoped. Now the question is whether Laufey can carry that momentum without a known mythological endpoint to build toward.

What we don't have yet is gameplay details. Sony's play here is to let the release date do the talking. That's fine for now. The studio has earned enough goodwill that February 2027 feels like a date you circle on the calendar without needing to see a 20-minute demo first.

Worth noting: February is a smarter window than people might realize. Early-year releases face less competition and tend to leg out financially. God of War 2018 launched in April. Ragnarok hit November. Sony clearly feels confident enough in this one to own a less crowded month.

Nina and I were talking about this the other day, how Sony's narrative studios have basically become the SquareSoft of this era. The ones you trust to deliver a cinematic single-player story that respects your time. She'd probably say the same about FFXIV's storytelling, and we'd go back and forth for an hour. But that's a separate argument for a separate day.

February 16, 2027. Mark it down. And maybe start clearing space on your PS5's SSD now, because these games are not getting smaller.
