Sony finally made it official: God of War: Laufey launches February 16, 2027, per Game Informer's report on the announcement. Pre-orders open today, September 29, so if you're the type who wants a steelbook on the shelf, the clock is already ticking. My calendar got its circle about ninety seconds after I read the news.

The date matters beyond knowing when to block off a weekend. A February window keeps the game clear of the holiday pileup, which is smart spacing for something this size. It gets room to breathe, and we get room to actually finish it before the next big thing lands.

Also, that subtitle. If you know your Norse mythology, you know exactly whose name Laufey is, and you know Sony didn't pick it at random. I won't invent details we don't have yet, but the name alone points somewhere very specific in the family tree, and I am very here for it.

Personally, I think the 2018 soft reboot and Ragnarok turned Kratos from a rage simulator into one of gaming's most surprisingly tender dads. Kratos and Atreus, the grief, the slow unclenching of a very angry man, that emotional core is what carried those games for me. Laufey has big shoes to fill, and my read is that the name points at digging deeper into the family history to do it.

Release date announcements used to feel like paperwork. Now they're events. My Discord lit up the moment this dropped, and half the messages weren't even about the date, they were about planning, who's taking the week off, whether this is a platinum-speed run or a slow savor. That's the part of gaming I love most. A date on a screen instantly becomes a group project.

And February 16 lands in a stretch of the year that's already looking stacked, so between this and everything else coming, my backlog has a backlog, and now it has an appointment. Almost rude to our free time, really.

If you're the planning type, watch for edition breakdowns now that pre-orders are live, because Sony rarely opens pre-orders without a collector's edition lurking a few news cycles behind. Expect a story trailer before long too. This far out, the marketing tends to build slowly and then accelerate fast.

Me, I'll be there day one. I cleared a weekend for Ragnarok and regretted nothing, and I intend to do the exact same thing again. Kratos has earned that much.
