Times Now News is reporting that God of War Laufey hits PlayStation 5 on February 16, 2027, with a separate Kratos-led game also in development. Two God of War projects at once is a serious commitment from a studio whose entire modern identity rests on big, story-driven action.

The February date gives Santa Monica a clean winter window. Ragnarok launched in November 2022 and, in my view, owned the holiday conversation that year. February doesn't carry the same retail weight, but it dodges the November bloodbath where every major title fights for the same shelf space. Smart positioning.

I covered the Laufey announcement earlier this week and the title alone tells you a lot. It points squarely at Atreus's mother and the Giant heritage running through the Norse saga. We don't know yet if the game is a direct prequel filling in her backstory or something more elliptical. The 2018 reboot and Ragnarok are two of the strongest narrative action games Sony has published, and the bar here is absurdly high regardless of what angle they take.

Nina Alvarez, who lives in FFXIV over in our Gaming section, would tell you the best spinoffs come from games that earned their world-building. She's always pointing to Shadowbringers as proof that side stories can outshine mainline entries, and our running Final Fantasy debates are better for it. She's got a point, even if I'd never admit it during one of our Squaresoft arguments. If Laufey goes where the title suggests, fleshing out a character we only knew through memory and journals, that's a storytelling challenge most studios wouldn't touch.

This is a trend I've watched cycle through a few times over the decades. Publishers in the PS2 era loved spinning off their biggest franchises into character-focused side stories. Some were genuinely great. Others, without naming names, existed to milk a brand. The ones that respected their source material and understood why players cared about the character? Those stuck. Santa Monica has earned enough trust that I'll follow them wherever Laufey goes.

The bigger question mark is the unnamed Kratos-led game that follows Laufey. No genre, no scope, no release window. All we know is that it exists. Could be a smaller-scale action title. Could be something pushing Kratos into a completely different framework. The man has been a rage-driven brawler, a tired father, a reluctant god-killer. At this point I wouldn't be shocked if they dropped him into a turn-based RPG and somehow made it work.

What I do know is that Santa Monica doesn't rush. God of War III shipped in 2010 and the 2018 reboot didn't arrive until roughly eight years later, a gap fans still bring up. Two projects running in parallel suggests the studio has expanded significantly, or Sony is spreading the franchise across multiple teams. Either way, PlayStation owners have a lot of Norse mythology coming.

February 16, 2027. Mark it. I'll be there day one, and I'll have a review for you before the credits roll.
