The first trailer for Paramount's Golden Axe animated series is here, and it's exactly the kind of adaptation I've come to expect from the modern "our nostalgic IP is also a joke about itself" school of television. Magic, barbarians, and a running commentary about the fact that none of this should exist in 2026. The trailer, courtesy of Video Games Chronicle, also confirms the details: all ten episodes land on Paramount+ on September 16.

I have a long history with Golden Axe. I pumped untold quarters into the arcade cabinet at my local pizza place, then bought the Genesis port and played through it with my cousin more times than I can count. The dwarves, the gnome who stole your potions, the mountable fire-breathing lizard things. It was a side-scrolling beat 'em up with a fantasy veneer and absolutely no story to speak of, and that was fine. Nobody played Golden Axe for the lore.

Which is exactly why this adaptation has me raising an eyebrow. The trailer leans hard into meta humor, with characters seemingly aware of how ridiculous their own premise is. That approach worked for, say, the Lego games, and it's become the default posture for adaptations of games too thin to carry a straight narrative. Sometimes it lands. Sometimes it feels like the writers apologizing for the source material before you get the chance to.

The voice cast is stacked with comedy talent, and you can feel that in the trailer's rhythm. Jokes come fast, a few land, a few whiff. Standard first-trailer stuff.

In its favor I'll say this: Golden Axe never took itself seriously to begin with. This is a series where you ride a chicken-legged dragon thing and punch skeletons. Going full comedy with it is at least honest to the spirit of the arcade original, unlike the grimdark route some adaptations take with material that has no business being grimdark. I've seen studios try to make 16-bit side-scrollers feel like prestige drama. It never works.

The gaming-to-animation pipeline has been genuinely good lately, which is a sentence I never thought I'd write after suffering through some of the adaptations of the '90s. If you're old enough to remember that era, you know. Some of you know.

Ten episodes dropping at once, and no confirmation yet on whether the story stretches beyond the original game's plot. Given that the original plot was "walk right, kill Death Adder," the writers had some filling in to do either way.

I'll watch it. Of course I'll watch it. I went in braced for the quarter-muncher of my childhood to get sanded down into something unrecognizable, and instead the trailer suggests they at least understood the assignment: it's silly because Golden Axe was always silly. Whether the joke sustains ten episodes is another question entirely. Ask me after September 16, ideally while I'm mid-death-adder-flashback with a fake brew in hand.
