Variety has a full recap of where things stand with Grand Theft Auto VI, and the big item is the one we've had circled for months now: November 19. Read the whole rundown over at Variety.

More than a decade will have passed between GTA V and its sequel. I remember lining up for the midnight release with a buddy who'd already mapped out his heist crew assignments before the game was even installed. We're doing it again this November, just with more gray hair.

Beyond the date itself, Rockstar has been feeding us details in measured doses, which is very much the house style at this point. The company learned a long time ago that silence builds more anticipation than a press tour ever could. If you want to know what's actually confirmed, the reliable stuff comes from Rockstar itself, in its own time, and the rest is noise until proven otherwise.

And there's plenty of noise. A whole leak economy has grown up around this game, and I'd treat most of it with the skepticism it's earned. I've been sorting the credible from the ridiculous all week, and November 19 settles a lot of arguments either way.

One thing I'd add that the recaps tend to skip: the wait itself changed what GTA 6 has to be. GTA V launched into a world where it could redefine the open-world genre almost by default. This one arrives after a decade of games borrowing from its blueprint, some of them pretty openly. Rockstar doesn't just have to be bigger. It has to feel like it was worth the wait.

Whether they pull it off is the question, and I've been doing this long enough to know that trailer polish and a living, breathing world are two different things. I was there for the Final Fantasy games that looked incredible in previews and fell apart in the back half. The verdict comes November 19, and not a day sooner.
