I still remember unboxing the original HomePod. That big, fabric-wrapped cylinder that sounded absolutely wonderful and took up roughly a third of my kitchen counter. I loved it. So when Apple quietly shifted focus to the HomePod mini, I understood the logic, even if I missed the full-size sound. The little one has been chugging along since 2020, which, in smart speaker years, is practically a lifetime.

So it's about time we started hearing real rumors about a successor. According to Geeky-Gadgets, the HomePod mini 2 could arrive with Wi-Fi 7 support and upgraded audio drivers. Neither of those details is confirmed by Apple, naturally, but the Wi-Fi 7 piece makes a lot of sense given that Apple has been pushing the standard across its newer devices.

Wi-Fi 7 in a speaker this size matters more than you might think. You get lower latency, better handling of multiple devices on your network, and faster handoff when you move audio from your phone to the speaker. If Apple wants the mini to be a real hub for HomeKit devices, and I suspect they do, the network upgrade would be a meaningful step forward.

The improved audio drivers are the part I'm most curious about. The original mini punches above its weight class, I'll give it that. My granddaughter Jess borrowed one for her apartment last semester and texted me asking how something that small could fill her living room with sound. But there's always room to grow. Better drivers could mean tighter bass response and cleaner vocals at higher volumes.

As for when we might actually see this thing, that's the mystery. None of the rumors floating around pin down a release date, which is both frustrating and pretty typical for Apple speculation this early in the cycle. We know the what; we just don't know the when.

My usual advice applies here. If you need a smart speaker right now, the current HomePod mini is still a perfectly capable little device, especially if you want something to control your smart home setup or pair two for stereo sound. But if you can wait, the Wi-Fi 7 upgrade alone might be worth holding out for, particularly if your home network is already making the jump.

I'll be watching this one closely. A smart speaker should disappear into your life and just work, and a faster, better-sounding mini would do exactly that. Apple just needs to tell us when, and whether, it's actually coming.
