Sunday nights just got their show back. Lanterns, the Green Lantern series DC has been cooking for what feels like forever, premieres tonight, Sunday, August 16, at 9 p.m. ET on HBO, and HBO Max starts streaming it that same second. If you dumped cable sometime in the last decade like the rest of us, AL.com has the full breakdown on watching it live online, and the short version is you need HBO Max.

The app works on basically everything at this point, phones, tablets, smart TVs, game consoles, the usual lineup. There's a cheaper ad-supported plan if you don't mind a few breaks, and a pricier ad-free tier if you're particular. Cable holdouts just flip to HBO at 9. New episodes land weekly on Sundays. Old-fashioned week-to-week. I actually prefer it that way, it gives you seven full days to argue about each episode before the next one arrives.

Quick catch-up for anyone who hasn't been following along. The show pairs Kyle Chandler's Hal Jordan, a worn-out veteran Lantern, with Aaron Pierre's John Stewart, a rookie getting handed a ring he never asked for, and drops them both into a murder investigation out in rural America. Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan round out the cast. Everyone keeps calling it True Detective with power rings. The trailers since spring have leaned hard into that vibe, all night drives and empty fields and two guys who don't trust each other yet.

But none of that is why I'm in. The last time Green Lantern got the live-action treatment we ended up with the 2011 movie. The one with the CG mask. This swings the complete other direction, grounded, character first, built on two actors who can carry a quiet porch conversation as easily as an effects spectacle. Chandler spent five seasons making Friday Night Lights feel like a documentary, and Pierre has been overdue for this kind of platform since Rebel Ridge.

I flagged Lanterns in my August streaming guide as the month's big swing and nothing I've seen since has changed my mind. Jess Wingo asked me last week why anybody still watches a premiere live instead of letting it sit in the queue for a few days. Because it's fun, Jess. Because the group chat only happens once.

So that's the plan tonight. Couch, snacks, HBO Max open by 8:50 just in case the app gets moody. If you're in, tell me which Lantern you're pulling for, Hal's resume or John's ceiling. It's an old argument and I have strong feelings.
