Mark your calendars, because iOS 27 arrives on September 14. After a whole summer of writing about beta builds, the real thing is nearly here, and before you tap that update button the second it appears, take a breath and do a little housekeeping first. Your future self will thank you.

Geeky Gadgets has a sensible prep guide, and honestly it boils down to two things: get yourself onto iOS 26.6 first, and clear out some storage space.

The first one is worth doing ahead of launch day. Go to Settings, then General, then Software Update, and confirm you're on 26.6. If you're not, update to that first, let the phone restart, and then check again for iOS 27 once it's available. It's the same logic as washing your dishes before loading the dishwasher. Sure the machine will probably cope, but why make it work harder than it needs to? Taking the stepping-stone route keeps things simple, and simple is what you want on a big update day.

The second thing is storage. iOS 27 needs room to work with during installation, and if your iPhone is stuffed to the brim with photos of your grandkids (and believe me, I understand the temptation, my granddaughter Jess fills my camera roll every single weekend), the update can stall out on you. Offload some videos, delete those apps you haven't opened since 2023, and let your phone breathe. You can check your free space under Settings, General, iPhone Storage.

Now, a word of caution from your friendly neighborhood tech aunt. Just because the update shows up on the 14th doesn't mean you have to install it the moment you see the notification. I've watched enough launch days since 1984 to know that servers get slammed and early builds sometimes carry a bug or two. If your phone is essential for work the next morning, waiting a day or two costs you nothing. Patience is free.

And please, whatever you do, back up first. iCloud or your computer, either one works. A five-minute backup is cheap insurance against a very bad afternoon. I remember when a botched software update meant dragging your machine to a repair shop and crossing your fingers. These days a backup is one toggle away, so use it.

Once you're updated, I'll be spending real time with iOS 27, including giving the revamped Siri a proper listen and reporting back on whether the interface changes actually feel like improvements. Technology should work for you, not the other way around, and the only way to know if this update passes that test is to live with it for a while.

So: update to 26.6, clear some space, back up, and then enjoy. And if your phone asks you to enter your passcode mid-update, that's normal. Don't panic like my sister did in 2019. She called me from the pantry.
