Well, it's that time of year again. Apple has lifted the curtain on the iPhone 18 Pro, and almost on cue, last year's flagship just got cheaper. According to MSN, the iPhone 17 Pro has received a £100 price cut in the UK, which puts it in genuinely interesting territory for anyone holding off on an upgrade.

Let me tell you, this dance is older than some of you reading this. I've watched it happen with every single iPhone going back to the original in 2007. New phone arrives, old phone drops in price, and suddenly the "boring" choice from a year ago becomes the smart one. My late husband used to call it the sweet spot shuffle, and he wasn't wrong. The phone that was $999 of cutting-edge tech in September becomes the value pick twelve months later, and it's usually still plenty of phone for just about everybody.

That's really the story here. The iPhone 17 Pro was, and still is, a genuinely good device. A capable camera system, a bright display, the kind of battery life that gets you through a full day without hunting for an outlet. Unless you're the sort who absolutely must have the newest silicon (and I say that with love, because my granddaughter Jess is exactly that sort), the differences year over year are usually incremental, not revolutionary.

A hundred pounds off is a hundred pounds off, though we should be clear about what that means in practice. Price cuts like this tend to apply to specific configurations and through specific retailers, so before you get too excited, check exactly which storage tier and color you're actually getting the discount on. The base model and the popular finishes usually move first. The ones nobody buys sit at full price forever like the last cookies on a platter.

Now, should you buy one? My advice, as always, depends on what's in your pocket right now. If you're coming from an iPhone 14 or older, or heaven forbid something with a cracked screen held together by hope and a plastic film, this is a lovely time to jump in. The 17 Pro at a discount will serve you beautifully for years, and you'll save real money compared to the new model.

If you bought an iPhone 16 Pro last year? Stay put. Please. Your phone does not know the 18 Pro exists, and it will not suddenly stop taking good photos because a newer one shipped. Technology should work for you, and chasing every annual release works against your wallet more than it works for anything else.

And if you're eyeing the iPhone 18 Pro itself, well, that's a conversation for another article. I'll have more to say once I've seen what it actually delivers beyond the keynote slides and marketing gloss. My colleague Marcus will likely dig into the chip architecture the way he always does, and I'd trust his numbers before I trusted a press release.

One last thing worth mentioning, because somebody always asks: yes, the UK getting a price cut usually signals similar discounts coming elsewhere, including here at home. Retailers tend to move in loose sync once Apple reshuffles its lineup. So if you're in the US and feeling a little left out watching the Brits snag a deal, sit tight. Patience has been the best phone-buying strategy since the days when we all lined up at carrier stores, and I don't see that changing anytime soon.
