I've been doing this long enough to remember when phone batteries were the size of a matchbox and lasted about as long as one. So when I see a rumor about a 5,567mAh battery in the iPhone 18 Pro Max, I sit up a little straighter.

Geeky-Gadgets is reporting that Apple's top-tier phone expected this fall could pack a significantly larger battery than what we have now. MacRumors independently reports the same 5,567mAh figure for US models, with a slightly lower 5,391mAh capacity for units sold in China. We're talking real all-day, then-some territory.

And I hear the same complaint from everyone in my family, from my granddaughter Jess to my neighbor Dave: the battery just doesn't last the way it used to. Part of that is because we're all doing more on these things. Streaming, navigating, video calling, taking photos that are now the size of small novels... A bigger battery isn't some premium luxury. It's what people actually need.

A bigger battery is only part of the story, of course. The source frames this as a notable increase of roughly 500mAh over its predecessor, which is a solid year-over-year bump even if it's not revolutionary. Apple has been refining power management for years, the kind of background work my colleague Marcus would dig into, so every bit of extra capacity should go a little further than it would have a few generations ago.

Now, I know what some of you are thinking. "Elizabeth, my phone is on its last legs right now. I can't wait until fall." Fair enough. If your current phone is genuinely struggling, don't hold out for a phone that's still months away. Technology should work for you, not the other way around. Limping along with a dying battery because you're waiting for something better is just making yourself miserable for no reason.

But if you upgraded recently, or you're sitting on a phone that's still getting the job done, this is one of those moments where patience might actually pay off. A 5,567mAh battery in the iPhone 18 Pro Max would be a meaningful bump over what we have now, and it would make a real difference in daily use.

I'm not telling anyone to skip a phone they need today. I'm just saying, if you've got the luxury of waiting, the 18 Pro Max is shaping up to be worth it.

I'll keep watching the rumors as they develop. When we get closer to launch and the leaks get more reliable, I'll give you a proper rundown of what's real and what's wishful thinking.
