Xbox Game Pass just picked up its seventh new game for September 2026, and this one lands day one: Kernel Hearts, the co-op magical girl roguelike action RPG, is now available to subscribers at no extra cost.

If the name sounds familiar, I wrote about this one when it got its September window a couple weeks back. It's the co-op ARPG where you squad up as magical girls and dive into roguelike runs, and I liked the pitch then for the same reason I like it now: it's a genre mashup that sounds like someone threw darts at a board and committed. Games like that usually turn out either brilliant or gloriously weird. Sometimes both.

The day-one drop matters more than usual this month. September is already stacked, with Wolverine hitting PS5 as the headline and a deep bench of everything else besides. A co-op roguelike sliding into the subscription instead of fighting for full-price attention on a storefront is smart positioning. Subscribers can try it risk-free, which is exactly the kind of game that benefits from that.

There's a retro lesson here too. Magical girl games have a long, spotty history in the West, going back to Super Famicom imports most of us never saw without a dictionary in hand. I'd know, I was one of the idiots with the dictionary. The genre rarely got serious action-game treatment; it was usually licensed quiz games and visual novels with the occasional brawler mixed in. Watching a modern studio build a full ARPG around the aesthetic, with co-op and roguelike structure, feels like someone finally took the premise seriously. About time.

Co-op is the wrinkle worth watching. Roguelikes live or die on run variety, and adding friends to that loop either multiplies the chaos beautifully or turns every death into a group argument. My money's on the former, but I've been wrong before, usually in a Discord call at 1 a.m.

If you're a Game Pass subscriber, this is a no-brainer download. Worst case you bounce off it in an hour. Best case you've got a new co-op night staple heading into a fall with one very large open-world crime game looming over everyone's backlog. Grab your friends, grab whatever the magical girl equivalent of a sword is, and see if the runs hold up.
