okay so this one's been a long time coming. After 23 years, Kill Bill is finally getting released as one complete movie, The Whole Bloody Affair, Tarantino's own combined cut of Volume 1 and Volume 2. Not two volumes sitting next to each other on a shelf. One movie. Over four hours of it.

If you don't know the history, short version: Kill Bill came out as two separate volumes, Volume 1 in 2003 and Volume 2 in 2004, and the combined version basically lived in legend territory ever since. The Whole Bloody Affair is Tarantino's own merged edit, and until now you basically could not officially watch it anywhere. You can read the full rundown over at MSN's coverage here.

And now it has actual dates. Theatrical release December 5, then digital retailers February 17. Which, yes, I'd love a physical version too, and if that gets announced I will be extremely loud about it. But for now this is real and it's official.

The thing I keep thinking about is the pacing. Watching it whole should click differently. The House of Blue Leaves fight into the buried-alive sequence into the final confrontation with Bill can finally flow like one long exhale instead of two separate arcs. And the anime origin section for O-Ren Ishii hits different when it's a chapter in a bigger book instead of a centerpiece. A four-hour-plus cut is a commitment, sure. But it's the commitment the movie was apparently always asking for.

Is Kill Bill his best action movie? The headline I'm riffing on says yes and I'm not going to argue hard against it. The Crazy 88 sequence alone. Uma Thurman in the yellow jumpsuit is one of those images that just permanently lives in pop culture's brain. My grandma showed me Pulp Fiction way too young and I've been chasing that Tarantino high ever since... Kill Bill is the one I rewatch the most. fight me in the comments or whatever.

Personally I think the theatrical run in December is the move. A crowd, a giant screen, four hours of revenge in one sitting... your couch is not replicating that energy. I've said it before and I'll say it again, some movies are events and this is one of them.

If you've only ever seen the split version, this is genuinely a different experience. Clear a full afternoon. Kill Bill deserves the whole bloody thing.
