Well, the leak faucet has opened again, and this time it's pouring out something juicy. According to a report from Geeky-Gadgets, Apple's long-rumored foldable iPhone now has a name making the rounds: the iPhone Ultra Fold. And the details attached to it are bolder than I expected.

The spiciest claim comes from Geeky-Gadgets itself, which argues this thing would replace the iPad mini in Apple's lineup rather than sit alongside it. The thinking goes that a phone-sized device folding out into a tablet-sized screen makes a separate small tablet redundant. Closed, you'd have a regular iPhone experience. Open it up and you've got a mini tablet in your pocket.

Now, I want to be careful here, because this is one outlet's interpretation and not a consensus. Macworld, for instance, reports the foldable is expected to launch alongside the iPhone 18, which sounds more like a new addition to the family than a replacement for anybody. My first reaction to the replacement theory was skepticism, and then I sat with it for a minute. I remember when people said the iPad mini would kill the Kindle, and when people insisted the iPhone 6 Plus was too big to hold. Apple reshuffles its deck more often than we give it credit for. But until we see actual dimensions and pricing, treat the "iPad mini is doomed" talk as one reporter's opinion, not the plan.

The detail that held up better under scrutiny, and the one that raised my eyebrows even higher: no Face ID. Multiple reports agree the foldable won't offer Face ID, with no TrueDepth camera system included. How you'd actually unlock the phone instead, whether that's some fingerprint arrangement or something else entirely, nobody has confirmed, and I'm not going to pretend otherwise. I have feelings about this. Face ID has been my unlock method since 2017, and it's the kind of technology you stop noticing because it just works. But Samsung's foldables have shipped with side-mounted fingerprint sensors for years, and those owners don't seem to be rioting in the streets. Sometimes good-enough security in a better form factor beats elegant security in a compromised one.

Now, the standard caveats apply, and you know I always give them. These are leaks, not announcements. Names change, features get cut, launch dates slide. I've watched three years of "the foldable iPhone is coming next year" reports, so I take every one of them with a grain of salt.

If this is real, it's still the biggest shakeup to Apple's lineup since the Plus-sized iPhones. Apple entering the folding market with a bang instead of a timid me-too device would be very on brand for them, and I'll confess the idea of one device that's a phone closed and a tablet open appeals to me. My purse has been hosting both an iPhone and an iPad for years now, and my shoulder has opinions about it.

Would I tell you to start saving? Not yet. But if you were about to buy an iPad mini, and you have the patience of a saint, it might be worth seeing how this shakes out. Technology should work for you, and a device that folds from phone to tablet genuinely solves a problem. I'll be following these leaks closely and will report back the moment Apple says a single official word.
