Spoiler warning, and I mean it this time: if you recorded the Marshals Season 2 premiere and haven't watched it yet, close this tab, go watch it, come back. I'll wait.

Still here? OK. USA Today reports that Luke Grimes is opening up about where Kayce Dutton stands as the Yellowstone spinoff returns. The short version: Kayce starts Season 2 with a wrecked love life, but romance may not be completely dead.

That's the tension worth caring about. To me Kayce has always been the quiet engine of this whole universe, the guy who says more with a jaw clench than most characters say in a monologue, so a season about him picking up the pieces fits him exactly. Grimes gets into all of it in the full piece, and it sounds like the show knows what it has in him.

But don't write the romance off. The door isn't fully closed, per the report, whatever else the premiere put him through. I've always thought Kayce's ability to actually connect with people is one of the few things keeping him tethered, and I'm curious whether this season tests that or finally lets it heal.

I've been a Kayce defender since the Yellowstone days, when half the audience was team Beth, the other half team Rip and Kayce just drifted around in the background being the only functional adult in Montana. Marshals gave him room to breathe as a lead, and Grimes has grown into it. He has this unhurried quality that fits the Taylor Sheridan-verse perfectly, even when the plotting around him gets, let's say, generous with its twists.

This one's quick because I don't want to spoil more than I have to. Watch the premiere, read the full piece, then tell me if you're still rooting for Kayce to find something resembling happiness. I know I am, poor guy. Between this and everything I'm juggling on Sister Wives, my Sunday nights are an emotional hazard zone.
