Apple has released macOS 27, codenamed Golden Gate, and there's one feature in here I've been waiting years for: system audio recording. If you've ever tried to record a tutorial for a family member, or capture a streaming call for later reference, you know the pain of discovering your screen recording came out with beautiful video and absolutely no sound. That particular frustration is finally over.

As Geeky Gadgets reports, the update lets you capture the sound coming from your Mac itself, right in the built-in recording tools, no third-party workaround required. I remember when doing this meant installing a virtual audio driver from some sketchy download site and praying it didn't wreck your sound settings. My brother-in-law spent an entire Thanksgiving weekend on that project once. Now it's a checkbox.

The other headline item is a batch of new AI-powered tools woven through the system, including upgrades to Siri. Apple has been building these features in gradually rather than trumpeting one giant assistant, which suits me just fine. I'll have more to say about what these tools can actually do once I've spent real time with them. I'd rather tell you what they do than what a press release promises, and I think you'd rather hear it that way too.

This release lands at a moment of transition as well. Intel Mac support is winding down in 2026, so if you're still holding onto one of those machines, it's worth checking Apple's supported-device list before you count on future updates. I can't confirm from here exactly where Golden Gate draws the line, so do check Apple's own compatibility page rather than taking my word for it. If you bought an M1 back in 2020 like I did though, you're sitting pretty. That machine has aged better than almost any laptop I've owned, and I've owned quite a few.

Should you update right away? Unlike the developer betas I warn everyone about, this is a public release, so yes, update. My usual advice applies though. Back up first, and don't do it five minutes before a big presentation. Give it an evening when your Mac can sit and do its thing.

The update is rolling out now, and if you don't see it on your machine yet, be patient. It may take a few days to reach everyone.

I'll spend the weekend with Golden Gate on my own machine and report back on how those AI tools behave in real, everyday use. And if system audio recording works half as well as it should, my brother-in-law is getting a phone call. He's not going to believe it.
