Well, somebody at Apple left the screen door open again. Buried inside the macOS Tahoe 26.7 release candidate, code sleuths dug up references to what appears to be Apple's upcoming hardware, and two items in particular made me sit up straighter: AirPods with cameras, and a foldable iPhone. Geeky-Gadgets has the full rundown if you want to dig through it yourself.
Leaks like this take me right back, let me tell you. I remember when finding out what Apple had planned meant waiting for a keynote and hoping Steve would pull something out of a pocket. These days the roadmap practically falls out of the software before the products exist. It's a different kind of theater, and I'll admit the pre-show is half the fun.
So what did the code actually spill? The camera-equipped AirPods are the item I can't stop chewing on. On the surface it sounds like a solution hunting for a problem, the kind of thing I'd normally wave off. The leak ties the cameras to Apple's Visual Intelligence features, which suggests the earbuds would see what you see and let the software make sense of it. If it genuinely helps the software help you, then the technology is working for you instead of showing off, and I'll hold Apple to that bar.
Then there's the foldable iPhone, which is the worst-kept secret in Cupertino at this point. The code references line up with the reporting we've been hearing, though the leak itself doesn't tell us the form factor, the price, or when it ships. I've had hands on Samsung's Z Fold line, including the Fold 8 Ultra coverage I did last month, and the category has grown up fast. Apple arriving late is on brand. They did it with big phones, with wearables, with 5G. Late, but usually polished.
Now, a word of caution from your friendly neighborhood skeptic. Release candidate code is a real source, but it's a snapshot of internal plans, not a promise. Products get renamed, delayed, or shelved between a string in a config file and a box on a store shelf. I've watched two decades of "confirmed" leaks evaporate by September. So treat this as strong evidence, not a press release.
And should you wait to buy anything? No. If you need a phone or a pair of earbuds now, buy them now. Camera AirPods and a foldable iPhone are, at minimum, many months out, probably longer. Waiting on a rumor is how you end up holding a four-year-old device "just one more year" while your granddaughter laughs at your battery life. I speak from experience, Jess still won't let me live it down.
I'll keep watching this one. When camera AirPods or the foldable get real specs, real prices, and real release dates, you'll hear from me, sassiness included if the price tag earns it. Knowing Apple's first foldable, it probably will.
