Apple TV has a light but interesting week coming for September 21 through 27, and the headline is Matthew McConaughey returning to comedy, which is territory I always welcome him back to. ComingSoon has the full rundown, but the short version is a new McConaughey comedy series plus the seventh episode of Women in Blue season two.

McConaughey first, because he's one of those actors whose career I've followed like a slow-burn miniseries. The rom-com run in the 2000s, the McConaissance, the stretch of serious indies where he got weird and great, then the years of mostly picking his spots. When he does comedy now it feels like a choice, not a default, and that usually makes the comedy better. He has a looseness that a lot of actors spend whole careers trying to fake.

I don't want to oversell a show before a single episode has aired in front of me, so consider this enthusiasm with an asterisk. But a weekly dose of McConaughey doing whatever this series turns out to be is an easy yes for my queue. If it's good, I'll say so. If it's a mess, well, some messes are still fun to watch him make.

The other arrival is Women in Blue season 2, episode 7. If you've been following along week to week, you already know where you stand. If you haven't started, this is one of those international dramas that sneaks up on you, and with the season this deep it might be the right moment to catch up from the top and ride the back half as it drops instead of waiting for the whole thing.

So that's the week for Apple. Light, but not empty. I've said before that a two-item release week can beat an eleven-item one, because eleven new things usually means ten things you'll never hear about again. A McConaughey comedy premiere plus a drama hitting its stride late in a season is a perfectly good week if you ask me.

My plan is to fire up the McConaughey premiere early in the week so I can tell you whether it's worth your time before the weekend. Jess Wingo keeps telling me I gravitate toward three-hour prestige stuff and skip the actual fun things, so this one's for her too. Watch this space for a verdict. And if you beat me to it, let me know what you thought, because I'm genuinely curious whether the show leans into his full McConaughey or keeps him reined in. That answer usually tells you everything.
