Hockey fans, your date is set. NHL 27 early access opens Friday, September 4 for anyone who bought a Deluxe Edition, and per Athlon Sports, the puck drops at midnight in your console's local timezone on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

East Coast, that's 12:00 AM ET Friday morning. West Coast night owls get it at 9:00 PM Thursday, which is the classic move if you want to squeeze in a few periods before bed. Same rollout EA has used for its sports lineup all year, so no surprises in the structure.

The standard edition arrives a few days later, which gives Deluxe buyers roughly a weekend head start on rosters, the Ultimate Team grind, and whatever new mode EA Vancouver is pushing this cycle. If you've followed our coverage of Madden 27 and EA Sports FC 27, you know the drill by now: early access is the real launch for the hardcore crowd. The street date is just when everyone else shows up.

I remember when the idea of paying extra to play a sports game three days early would've gotten you laughed out of the rental store. Now it's table stakes for the annualized lineup. Not judging, I've done it. I just wish the on-ice product earned the upcharge every year the way the marketing implies it will.

Worth noting for series loyalists: the franchise has been in a bit of a rut on the gameplay side, with yearly installments leaning on presentation tweaks and HUT content over the kind of on-ice overhaul the PS5 hardware allows. Whether NHL 27 breaks that pattern, I can't say until review copies land. The early access window will tell us a lot, since that's when the hardcore community stress-tests everything EA's playtesters might have missed.

If you're planning a launch-night session, my advice is the same as every September: preload now. Don't wait for the midnight unlock to start a 60-gig download on a crowded server. Ask anyone who tried to play an EA title at 12:01 on launch day how that went.

Deluxe Edition early access starts September 4 at midnight local time on PS5 and Xbox Series consoles. Everyone else, keep your skates sharp for the standard release a few days after.
