OK so the first trailer for David O. Russell's Madden just dropped and I've watched it three times and I still don't fully believe what I'm looking at. Nicolas Cage is John Madden. Christian Bale is Al Davis. Neither of them look like themselves, like at all, and that's kind of the whole point.

The movie is a sports biopic about Madden's life, and if you only know the name from the video game (valid, that's most of us), the film is leaning into the actual man. ComingSoon has the trailer if you want to see the transformations for yourself, and honestly the transformations are the whole story here. I'm not going to pretend I can break down every beat of it from memory, I was too busy staring at Bale's hairline.

And the transformations are wild. Cage has the look, the hair, the whole Madden energy. Bale, who has spent his entire career treating his body like a group project, disappears into Al Davis's whole thing with the slicked hair and the shades. There's a moment in the trailer where I genuinely could not clock which one was Bale until he moved. That man cannot help himself and I respect it.

David O. Russell doing a football movie is a sentence I did not expect to type this year. The guy behind The Fighter (also Bale, also a true sports story, so ok, there's a track record here) and American Hustle swinging into a Madden biopic feels like one of those Hollywood bets that either pays off huge or becomes a very interesting failure. Big, messy, and loud would track for both Russell and Madden, so.

What I keep thinking about is the casting logic of it all. Cage as Madden is the kind of pick that sounds like a meme until you see it and then it sounds inevitable. Madden was this huge, warm, chaotic presence who talked too fast and loved the game so much it spilled out of him. Who else are you casting for that energy? It's Cage or nobody.

Release-wise, it's hitting November 18, 2026. Sports biopics have been quietly eating lately and this one has the awards-season smell all over it, Bale alone basically guarantees a conversation whether the movie's good or not.

Anyway. I showed the trailer to my grandma and she said Bale looks like "every man who ever ran a football team in 1978," which is the most accurate review I've heard so far. Going to need everyone to experience Cage yelling about football as soon as humanly possible.
