Nicolas Cage playing football legend John Madden was already one of those casting ideas that sounds like someone made it up at a bar and then everyone in Hollywood just went with it. Now the movie has an actual release date, we're getting our first look at Cage in character, and yeah, it works. It weirdly, perfectly works.

According to Yahoo Entertainment, the film has locked its date and dropped new footage that gives us a real sense of what this thing looks like. Cage plays the guy who went from Hall of Fame coach to broadcasting icon to the name on the front of one of the most recognizable sports video game franchises in the world. That's a lot of ground for one movie, but the early stuff suggests they're leaning into Madden the person rather than just Madden the brand.

I've been enjoying Cage's whole run lately. The man doesn't phone it in, at least not from what I've seen, even when the movie around him is uneven. He's fully committed in a way that makes you respect the effort. That's my subjective take anyway. Casting him as Madden feels insane for about three seconds and then you see him and you go, oh, right, of course. Who else was going to do this?

The footage gives us a taste of the tone they're going for, though it's hard to say too much from a first glimpse. But they're already showing Cage in character, which means they're probably confident in what they have. You don't drop first footage unless you feel good about the cut.

Cage is also attached to MGM+'s upcoming Spider-Noir series, which means he's been busy. The guy just does not stop working.

No word yet on how much of the movie covers the video game side of Madden's legacy, which might actually be the most interesting part for a lot of people. If the movie gets into that, we could be looking at something special. If it stays on the coaching and broadcasting side, that's still a solid sports biopic with Nicolas Cage at the center.

The film premieres on Prime Video on November 18. This one just moved way up my watch list. A Cage performance in a sports movie about one of the most beloved figures in American football history? I'm in. I'll be there on day one, couch ready, snacks lined up on the coffee table like goalposts.
